「仮面をかぶる」という言葉を辞書で調べたところ
「本心を包みかくして、表情にあらわさない」とでました。「猫をかぶる」って言葉と同じ意味だね。
本心を隠すって、なにかたくらんでそうだから、「仮面をかぶる」ってなんか嫌なイメージを抱きがちだよね。
でも、この仮面って、日常の生活にすごく役立ついいものだとブイチは考えています。
今日は、仮面の話をするね。お付き合いください。

ブイチはいわゆる「仮面」と日常で着る服は同じだと考えています。
みんなは普段、服を着て生活をしているよね。
お外で人と会うときは、服を着ることが礼儀だもんね。
仮面も同じだと思います。人と接するとき、仮面をつけることは一つの礼儀だと思うんだよね。
仮面をつけないで、本心のままお互い会話したら、相手の嫌なところをそのまま口にしてしまうから、喧嘩になりがちです。あっちこっちで毎日喧嘩していたら、大変だよね。
だから、人とあうときに仮面をつけることは礼儀なんだよね。ブイチの考えだけど。
仮面をかぶることや猫をかぶることに、不必要に罪悪感を感じなくてもいいと思います。
たまに「作り笑いをやめることができなくて苦しい」という話を聞くことがあります。
この場合、問題は、「人に嫌われたくないという気持ちにとらわれていること」であって、「作り笑いをすること」ではないと思うんだよね。
するべきことは、「作り笑いをやめること」ではなくて、「人に嫌われることもあるさ」と割り切ることだと思います。ブイチの考えだけどね。
仮面をかぶること自体は悪くないんだよね。

服装って、いろんな役割があると思います。例えば、工場での作業服のように、「仕事の効率をあげる」っていう役割をもっている服もあるよね。
他の役割には「宣言」があります。
「自分はこういう人間です!!」とか「自分はこういう人間になりたいです!!」と周囲や自分自身に宣言をすることね。
例えば、明るい色で元気なキャラクターの描かれたイラストの入った服を着ている人は「自分は明るい人です!!」という宣言をしているんだよね。意識的にしろ、無意識にしろ。
周囲の人も、「この人は明るい人なんだろうな」っていうふうに思って接するから、その期待にこたえようとして、明るい人になりやすいんだよね。
最初は着慣れていない服も、毎日着てると、だんだん似合ってきます。服が変わったわけではありません。着る人が、服に似合うように変わったんだと思うんだよね。昔のフランスの将軍のナポレオンさんも、人はまとっている制服どうりの人間になると言っています。
さて、仮面も同じで、「私はこういう人間です！」と宣言する役割があります。
例えば「しかめっ面」の仮面をつけていたら、周りの人は「この人は怖い人なんだろうな」って思います。そうしたら、自分でも気づかないうちに「いつもイライラしている怖そうな人」になりやすいと思うんだよね。
少なくとも、いつもニコニコしている人よりは、イライラしている時間が長くなります。
逆もまたしかりです。「優しい表情」を心がけていたら、自然と親しみやすい人になれると思います。もちろん、同じニコニコした表情でも、「相手に嫌われたくない」という気持ちでつくった仮面と、「相手を怖がらせたり、不安にさせないようにする優しさ」から創った仮面では、美しさに違いがでるけどね。
最初は表情がぎこちなくて、仮面の付け心地が悪くても、続けているうちにだんだんと板についてくると思うんだよね。仮面が似合うように、自分を変えることでさ。

先日、東京都庭園美術館のマスク展に行ってきました。
世界中のマスクが飾られてあって、地域によってマスクの持つ意味や特徴に違いがありました。
だけど、世界中のマスクに共通するものもあったようにブイチは思いました。
その一つは「変身願望」です。
神々や精霊をかたどった仮面をつけたり、強い野生動物の仮面をつけることで、普段の自分を超えたものになりたいという気持ちがマスクから伝わりました。
仮面と、自分を変えることは、つながっているところがあると思うんだよね。

Mask is useful to change yourself.
When I look up the meaning of “Wear a mask” in a dictionary, it explains “Hide your real mind, never showing your mind in your facial expression.” And “Play the hypocrite” is the similar meaning, right?
“Hide your real mind” seems to conspire something, so that “Wear a mask” is negative image, isn’t it?
But I think this “mask” is very convenient to our daily life.
Today, I want to talk you about this “mask”.

I think mask is the same as clothes which we wear everyday.
You wear clothes everyday, right?
It is a manner to wear clothes when we go out.
I think mask is the same. To wear a mask is a kind of manner when we meet somebody.
Without a mask, at that time, you say straight to others what you think. Then you might point out your disliking points of others. Quarrels might take place every time you talk. It’s hard for you to make quarrels everywhere, everyday.
That’s why I think wearing a mask is a manner. You don’t need to feel guilty from wearing a mask or playing the hypocrite.
I sometimes hear “I feel painful as I cannot stop superficial smile.”
In this case, the point is not “I cannot stop superficial smile”. But the point is the feeling that he (she) doesn’t like to be disliked by others.
I think what we should do is not stop superficial smiling, but think that we sometimes might be disliked by others.
Wearing a mask itself isn’t bad.

I think each clothes has its role. For instance, work clothes in factories has role to increase “working efficiency”, right?
Another role of clothes is “declaration.”
This is a declaration like “I am such a person” or “I want to be such a person”.
For instance, a person who wears a bright color clothes with cheerful character declares “I am a cheerful person,” even if it is consciously or unconsciously.
And as others regards him as a cheerful person, they treat him like so, and he tends to become cheerful character to meet these expectations.
Then, mask is the same. It has a role as declaration. If you always wear a smiling mask, you are making a declaration to others that you are a friendly person. And as others treat you as such a friendly character, you try to meet these expectations from others. At first, you might smile awkwardly, but you can make a real smile one day.

The other day, I went to the Mask exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum.
Many masks from the world were displayed. Every mask has its own distinctive purpose and features.
I think there is a common factor of masks in the world.
That is “desire to change”.
I feel that, by wearing masks of gods, sprits or mighty wild animals, people wanted to transcend usual themselves.
I think there is a link between masks and people’s desire to change.
