飢えや渇きを満たしたいっていう気持ちのように、物事を達成したいって強く思う気持ちのことだよね。
この「ハングリー精神」って、貧しい人や飢えた人だけが持てるものだとブイチは昔考えていました。
そして豊かで財産があって、平穏な生活を過ごしている人はこの気持ちを持てないし、持つ必要がないとも思っていました。
実際、そういう一面はあります。
豊かな人よりも貧しくて辛い思いをしている人のほうが、「ハングリー精神」を持っている人が圧倒的に多いです。
でもね。
豊かで財産がある人のなかにも、「ハングリー精神」を失わずに持ちつづけている人はいるんだよね。
ヨーロッパの一流クラブでプレイしているサッカー選手たちを見てみてください。
彼らはもはや、飢えていないし、成功しているし、女の子にもモテるし、財産もあります。
だけど彼らは必死になって戦っているでしょ？シュートを外したらものすっごく悔しがるし、逆にシュートをいれたらものすっごく喜ぶでしょ？
なにが彼らを突き動かしているんだろうね？
夢とか理想だとブイチは思います。
「こういうプレイをしたい」とか「こういうサッカー選手になりたい」とか「あの選手よりうまくなりたい」とかさ。
夢に対する圧倒的な渇きが、彼らを突き動かしているんだよね。
「ハングリー精神」って夢に対する圧倒的な渇きの気持ちのことだと思うんだよね。

貧しい生活をしている人のすべてが、「ハングリー精神」をもっているとは限りません。
貧しくても、今の生活に満足している人は、現状維持を望むので、挑戦したり努力したりしようと考えないからです。
今の生活に満足できないで、もっと豊かな生活を夢見る人たちだけが、「ハングリー精神」をもつことができるんだよね。
ただ、豊かな生活をしている人よりも貧しい生活をしている人のほうが、今の自分の生活に満足しないで、豊かな生活を夢見ている人が多いです。だから、「ハングリー精神」を持っているのは貧しい人のほうが多いんだよね。

アイフォンを創ったスティーブ・ジョブズさんは昔、大学の卒業式のスピーチで「Stay hungry」と言いました。
この言葉の意味は、「社会にでて大人になっても夢見る心を忘れるなよ」って意味だとブイチは理解しています。
たしかに、子どもに比べて大人は夢を失いがちです。
子どもの頃は「夢を持て」とか「可能性は無限」といわれても、大人になったら「いい年して夢ばかり見るな」とか「現実を見ろ」と言われます。
生活を背負ったり、自分の肉体にも曲がり角が来たり、夢を捨てる言い訳はいくらでもでてきます。
でもね、あくまでそれは言い訳であって、理由にはなりません。
どんなに豊かでも、どんな年齢でも、夢を持つことができないことは絶対にありません。
だから、ハングリー精神はだれでも持てるんだよね。

There are words like “hungry spirit”, right?
Hungry spirit is a strong heart which desires something in such occasions like you are hungry or thirsty.
I thought that only poor or starving people had this hungry spirit.
I thought that persons who had enough fortune and lived their lives peacefully couldn’t have this hungry spirit and didn’t need to have this.
There is surely such an aspect.
Actually we can see more people who have hungry spirit in the poor rather than in the rich.
But,,,
Among rich people, there is someone who still keeps holding a hungry spirit.
Please take a look at players in top football clubs in Europe.
They are not starving any more. They are successful. They are popular with girls. They have much fortune, too.
But they play games desperately, right?
If their shoots are out of the goal posts, they will show full expression of disappointment from bottoms of their hearts, right?
Playing in top clubs is not their dream any more.
They might have ever had such a dream, but at present, they have a next dream.
This dream is like “I want to play like this,” or “I want to be such a player.”
Eagerness for these dreams makes them move.
I think that hungry spirit is dreaming heart.

Not all of poor people have hungry spirit.
Even if he is poor, when he is satisfied with current situation, he wants to keep it and never challenges, nor does he make efforts.
Only persons, who are not satisfied with current situation and dream of better life, can hold “hungry spirit”.
There are more people, who are not satisfied with current lives and dream of rich lives, in the poor rather than in the rich,
That’s why there are many in poor people who holds “hungry spirit.”

When Steve Jobs, who created iPhone, made a speech at the graduation ceremony of a university, he said, “Stay hungry.”
I realize his words as “Keep on having dreams even if you get an adult.”
Adults surely tend to lose dream, compared with children.
When we were children, adults said to us, “You should have dreams,” or “Your possibility is infinite.” But when we get an adult, they say, “You are already an adult, so don’t keep on dreaming,” or “Look at the reality.”
There are many excuses to give up our dreams like “We have our life” or “My body gets old.”
But these words are just excuses, not the reason.
Whether you are rich or old, you can have a dream.
That’s why everybody can have a hungry spirit.
