Defense changes the current situation.

Success sometimes weakens the person.

If you succeed in something, others around you change attitude towards you.
Before you succeed, they might have cold attitude to you, but once you succeed, their attitude changes into warm one.
As people around you suddenly make a fuss over you, your coziness has changed suddenly.
Cold environment changes to comfortable like lukewarm water.
But, that comfortable feeling is risky to you.
Circumstances get comfortable, you are satisfied with it, and finally you stop your growth.
As it is comfortable, you are discouraged to get out of the current situation and to challenge new things.
In the middle of severe winter, you might hesitate to get out of your warm house, right?
The person who lost challenging or creating spirits start to enclose his territory and keep it.
He sticks to the position, honor or human relation which he has established so far, and he fears to lose those.

In Kanji character, “defense(守備)” is written as “守(protect)” and “備(prepare).

For instance, let’s imagine boxing.
In boxing, what does the athletes defends and for what he is prepared?

Some boy thinks “Protect myself, be prepared for opponent’s attack.”

Answers are as many as number of thinkers, so this might be one correct answer.
For your reference, I tell you my thinking about this question.
In case of boxing defense, I think “Protect myself, and I am prepared to attack.”       It is like aiming at the counter punch, for instance.
To sum up, I think preparing for victory is the essence of defense. That is because you cannot win if you just continue to protect yourself.
“Defense to keep current situation” and “defense to change the current situation” are apparently different.

The former has neither challenging spirit nor progress. It is just keeping the current situation at best or it gets weaker.
In case of boxing, if you just protect yourself and never hit back, you will be fallen in the end.

This way of thinking can be adaptable into daily lives.
If you stick to success in the past and your current position, reject to change, and start to protect the current situation, your growth stops and your decline starts.
I don’t say, “Never defend yourself.” Defense is very important.
But, please think what is over there after you defend yourself.
Are there hope or victory?
