「自分が楽に生きられる場所を求めたからといって、後ろめたく思う必要はありませんよ。
サボテンは水の中に生える必要はないし、蓮の花は空中では咲かない。
シロクマがハワイより北極で生きるほうを選んだからといって、だれがシロクマを責めますか」
ブイチの好きな言葉の一つです。
梨木香歩さんの「西の魔女が死んだ」という小説のなかの言葉だそうです。

ブイチが違和感を感じている言葉に「石の上にも３年」という言葉があります。
３年石の上にいて、なにがいいのでしょうか？
たとえば、学校で毎日毎日いじめられている子がいるとします。
陰湿ないじめを毎日我慢して、学校に行くことが辛くて辛くてたまらなくて、自殺も考えているとします。
彼は３年間学校に通って、なにが得られるのでしょうか？歪んだ性格でしょうか？学歴でしょうか？
それは少年期の貴重な３年を犠牲にするほど価値があるものでしょうか？
転校したり、通信制の学校に通って手に入れる学歴ではいけないのでしょうか？

「篭城（ろうじょう）」という言葉を知っているかな？
敵の国に攻められたときに、城のなかにこもって、被害がでることを防ぐ戦い方のことです。
この篭城戦法をとるときには、条件があります。
それは「城のなかにいることで、状況がよくなる希望がある」ことです。
援軍が来るとか、相手が退却する見込みがあるとかね。
逆に言えば、そういった希望がないのであれば、この戦い方をとるべきではありません。
篭城をすると、時間がたつにつれて、城の中にこもっているほうが不利になります。
食べるものがなくなってくるので、食べ物の奪い合いがおこって、城の中が地獄になるんだよね。
城の外では相手が取り囲んでいるので、いまさら外に討ってでても勝ち目はありません。
降参するにしても、攻められたときにすぐに降参するならまだしも、何ヶ月も篭城して抵抗したあとでの降参だと、敵もフラストレーションがたまっているので許してくれません。
それだったら、城を囲まれる前に、勇気を出して外で戦ったほうがまだいいと思うんだよね。
織田信長さんだって、今川さんに攻められたときに、城にひきこもらないで、勇気を出して桶狭間で戦ったから勝てたと思うんだよね。
きっと、城にひきこもって相手が帰るのを祈っていたら、結果は違っていたと思います。

つまり、大事なのは「希望があるかどうか」だと思うんだよね。
ブイチは「忍耐」という言葉と「無意味な我慢」という言葉を使いわけるようにしています。
希望のために今を耐え忍ぶことを忍耐。
希望はないけれど、環境を変える勇気がないために、ただ我慢をすることを「無意味な我慢」とよんでいます。
同じ耐えることでも、その先に希望があるかどうかで、意味が違ってくるんだよね。
君が今、なにかに耐えているとしたら、なんのために耐えているのか、考えてほしいんだ。
耐えているその先には希望があるのでしょうか？
その希望を手にいれるためにはどのくらいの期間、耐えなければならないのでしょうか？
その希望は、逃げないで長い間耐えるに値する希望でしょうか？

“Three years on cold stone (make the stone warm.)”
This is a Japanese proverb, but I feel uncomfortable from this.
What will be good if we sit on stone for three years?
For instance, imagine there is a boy who is bullied in the school everyday.
He is suffered from severe bulliings everyday, and he doesn’t want to go to school any more. He might consider committing suicide. If he goes to school for three years, what will he gain from it? Twisted character? Educational qualification? Is it worth while wasting precious three years of his childhood? Isn’t it good to transfer to other school or to take a correspondence course?

When you feel like changing current environment and going different place, what are your criteria to decide whether to stay at the place where you are now or to move to new place?
Of course, everybody has their own thinking.
For your reference, in my case, I decided it by considering “which way is better to get the one which I want.”
If I feel that I can get easily the thing here which I want, I decided to stay the place even if it was very hard. If I judged that there was no meaning to stay here, I promptly change the environment.

Do you know “holding castle fight”?
This is a tactics of war to fight against the enemy invading the country. Soldiers gather in the castle and hold it against the besieging enemy.
There is a condition to take this tactics.
That is “there is a hope for improvement of circumstance by holding the castle.”
The hope is like that the reinforcement will come, or for instance, the enemy will withdraw soon.
If there’s no such a hope, you shouldn’t take this tactics.
In the holding castle fight, the defenders get disadvantageous as time passes. As food decreases in the castle, the struggle over the food might occur. As the number of besieging enemy is much more than the defenders, there is no opportunity for the defenders to win if they fight outside the castle.

The point is whether there is a hope or not.
I distinguish “worthy patience” from “useless patience”.
I regard “being patient now for a hope” as “worthy patience”.
I regard “being patient without any hope” as “useless patience”.
With hope or without hope; even if they are the same “patience”, the meaning is totally different, isn’t it?
